Safety as Priority

From the dawn of the 20th century, since mass production of automobiles had taken place, society as a whole had been gifted with perhaps the most widely-used invention in human history. What used to be pathways for horse-drawn carriages were quickly replaced by cemented roads. Towns and cities that were once days or even weeks away were suddenly reachable in a matter of hours. Such has been the impact of the invention of cars that it has dramatically altered our very existence.

However, with the advent of this new-found lifestyle, accidents, some life-threatening, others even fatal, have been a steady occurrence, that measures had to be taken to ensure driver’s as well as the passenger’s safety. Studies have shown that about 20% of fatal automobile accidents involved drivers under the influence of alcohol, commonly known as DUI (Blood Alcohol Content, 2008).

However, what is alarming other than the casualties, is that these accidents could’ve been prevented thru education and orientation of the drivers involved. Defensive driving has been a common word, but what it is exactly? According to Safe Practices for Motor Vehicle Operations, it means driving to save lives, time and money, in spite of the conditions around you and the actions of others (Defensive driving, 2007).

One of the most effective ways of defensive driving is through the two-second rule, wherein the driver maintains a minimum distance from the other car of approximately 2 seconds before collision (Defensive driving, 2007). Usually under normal conditions, this will give ample time for the driver to avoid accident. Brian Chee, managing editor of Autobytel Inc. , the authority in drivers’ education, sums up the safety principles in three surprisingly easy categories: Staying alert, Staying put, and Sharing the road (Chee, 2008).
