Chronic Diseases continue to plaque many people each year. The number of cases reported continues to rise and the majority of them end in fatality. Most of these diseases are preventable and new treatments have been discovered. While the five year survival rates have risen dramatically since the 1900s and all cancer is not fatal, cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the United States.
Causes and Risk Factors There are a variety of causes and risk factors for cancer. According to Axia College Reading Chapter 12 page 366 the two major class factors that cause cancer are hereditary risk and acquired environmental isk. Hereditary factors are non-modifiable, but environmental factors are modifiable. There are lifestyle risks which refer to the probability of an individual over their life course, developing and dying from cancer. Relative risk compare an individual known for taking part in certain risk behaviors verse someone who does not participate in these behaviors. Diagnosis Information Because there are many types of cancer, the diagnosis information is done by performing certain test.

Certain cancers can be diagnosed by completing less evasive blood test, while other cancers are detected by performing cultures such as biopsy. For instance, to detect colon cancer a doctor may order a fecal occult blood test. Other cancers such as breast and lung cancer are diagnosed using X-ray and mammograms. The main way of detecting cervical cancer is through yearly pap smears. IV. Treatment Treatments for cancer are generally decided by the type of cancer a person has and the stage of cancer. Treatment of cancer is not a guarantee of curing cancer.
Cryosurgery is a technique used to freeze and kill abnormal cells. Cryosurgery may have fewer side effects, is less expensive compared to other treatments, and has the shortest recovery time. Radiation therapy uses high-energy radiation to kill cancer cells and can also damage normal cells. For this reason the treatment must be carefully planned to reduce side effects. Chemotherapy (also known as chemo) uses drugs to destroy cancer cells. Depending on the type of cancer and stage chemotherapy can cure, control, or ease cancer symptoms.
Since most cancer is preventable, precautions can be taken to avoid getting cancer. By eliminating or avoiding the use of tobacco products a person can lower their risk of getting certain types of cancer. The choices of food people choose to eat can play a major role in the contraction of certain cancers. Whenever possible try to eating organic fruits and vegetables to avoid consuming chemicals and pesticides. Physical activity benefits people in many ways. Not only is physical activity a key element in maintaining a healthy weight, it also decreases the risk for ontracting cancers such as colon and rectal cancers.
Cancer is a widely spreading epidemic that comes in a variety of forms. There is more than one way cancer is caused and the risk includes lifestyle and relative risk. The way cancer is diagnosed depends on the type of cancer a person has. Cancer can be treated by cryosurgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. Each treatment comes with side effects and none of the treatment can be 100% guaranteed. The best way to prevent cancer is by education and avoidance of destructive lifestyle behaviors.
